Service

Upper GI endoscopy (gastroscopy)

A thin, flexible camera examines the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum to find the cause of heartburn, upper abdominal pain, bleeding or anaemia. Biopsies can be taken in the same session, usually under light sedation.

What to expect

Calm and clear, step by step.

  1. 1

    Before

Bring previous reports and a list of your medicines — especially blood thinners and diabetes medication. If a procedure is planned you will receive written preparation and fasting instructions.

  2. 2

    During

The doctor explains what will happen and answers your questions. Endoscopic procedures are usually done under light sedation, so they are not painful.

  3. 3

    After

You rest briefly while the sedation wears off; a companion should take you home. Mild bloating passes quickly.

  4. 4

    Results & plan

You leave with a written report, a clear treatment plan and, when samples are taken, a date to review the results.

Questions

What patients often ask.

How do I book an appointment?

Book online from the booking page by choosing the clinic, day and session; you will receive a booking reference. You can also contact the clinic by phone or WhatsApp.

Do I need to fast before an upper endoscopy?

Yes. Usually no food for 6–8 hours before the procedure and clear fluids only until 2 hours before, following the clinic's instructions about your regular medicines.

How do I prepare for a colonoscopy?

A clean bowel is essential: a low-fibre diet for one to two days before, then the bowel-preparation laxative exactly as described in the written instructions from the clinic.

Is endoscopy painful?

Endoscopy is usually done under light sedation, so it is not painful; mild bloating afterwards passes quickly. You will need a companion to take you home after sedation.

What should I bring to my first visit?

Bring previous reports, lab tests and imaging, plus a list of your current medicines — especially blood thinners and diabetes medication — and any earlier endoscopy reports.
